Excerpt: After spending the day with Lizzy and Oakley, Christine hoped for their marriage even more. She loved the way they interacted with each other, and she admired the way they chose to serve her. Indeed, she almost forgot about Mr. Davenport a few times that day—at least for a few moments at a time. The shock of the situation abated, the reality beginning to establish as Christine felt a dull pain toward the entire subject. She thought about the superficial relationship Mr. Davenport and she had entertained. It was not like what she saw now from Lizzy and Mr. Oakley. That was true affection, true love. They cared more about each other than about their own selves. Had she married Mr. Davenport, this would not have been the case. After mulling over her situation for the past few weeks, she began to think. Among those high, stalwart cliffs, she then made a resolution. Their presence spoke to Christine, teaching her that she must be more steadfast in her desires. She determined that day that she did not need a man to validate her existence. She did not need a man to establish or promote her social standing. And perhaps most importantly, Christine would not marry if these base reasons were in play. She would only marry if she truly loved; whole love, unselfish and pure.
